8a. International fisheries management
As the shared use of marine resources through global fisheries continues, the need to implement effective resource management measures and coordinate interests of the countries involved has become increasingly important. In order to address these issues, several conventions, agreements, and regional organizations have developed during the late twentieth century. Recently, the global demand for fisheries products has increased dramatically and new issues such as illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, negative environmental impacts, and safe operations, have created the need for additional multinational measures. This sub-session discusses the current state of fisheries, identifies issues that need to be solved, and measures that can be implemented to improve through international fisheries management.
