6. Freshwater, Coastal and Marine Environments
6e. Monitoring and sustainable environmental management
Continuous environmental monitorings on marine coasts, lakes and rivers are crucially important for sustainable utilization of aquatic biological resources and hence sustainable fisheries. Coastal environments are closely linked with upland forests and inland rivers. Developments of holistic approaches and managements from watershed to coastal areas are essential for wise use of biological resources and sustainable fisheries on the coasts. Further, a new concept of "Sato-Umi" will be presented and discussed. Sato-Umi focuses on sustainable environmental managements by integrating human activities into the coastal area managements aiming at higher biological productivity and protection of biodiversity. This session focuses on the importance of systematic monitorings, holistic approaches from river to sea for understanding integrated coastal environments, and "Sato-Umi" for sustainable and wise use of coastal areas by fishermen and common people.
