6. Freshwater, Coastal and Marine Environments
6b. Aquaculture environments
Intensive aquaculture industry has developed steadily during the past decades. Aquaculture production will complement the decreasing production of wild caught fisheries. However, aquaculture can cause negative impacts to the environments. To alleviate the negative impacts of aquaculture, many mitigation measures have been proposed. However, the most practical way to implement environmental management of aquaculture is to evaluate farm environments objectively and to conduct aquaculture within the range of the assimilative capacity of the surrounding environments. An integrated approach basically requires developments of estimation of assimilative capacity of the receiving waters, the determination of environmental quality standards and environmental monitoring and assessments. In addition, there has been increasing interests focused on 'polyculture' and 'offshore aquaculture' systems. This subsession will bring experts together to discuss the issues regarding mitigating techniques in order to promote the future sustainability of the aquaculture industry.
