5. Material Cycling in Aquatic Ecosystems
- Linking Climate Change and Fisheries |
| 5c. Ecosystems and fisheries (general) |
| An ecosystem approach to fisheries (EAF) has been recently advocated by many organizations including UN/FAO. In order to overcome various uncertainties in population dynamics, stock assessment and management, EAF relies on adaptive management and a precautionary approach for management of ecosystems. Underlying ecosystem knowledge spans from basic biology (e.g., descriptions of species, biodiversity) to integrated ecology. This, session will welcome a broad range of theoretical or applied concepts that are relevant to EAF. Papers on ecosystem services, ecosystem modeling and development and application of ecosystem indicators will be covered in this session. More management-oriented papers may be transferred to Session 7 - Biodiversity and Management. |
