4b. Human health and seafood
The demand for seafoods has rapidly increased since the beneficial role of seafoods and seafood components in diets has been widely recognized. The Japanese first defined a functional food as any food capable of preserving good health by some specific values that are different from conventional food nutrients.  The concept of functional foods has spread and lead to the development of new type foods with concepts similar to nutraceuticals, designer foods and others.  In this sub-session, the topics related to marine-derived functional components, functional foods, nutraceuticals, medicines, supplements and their bio-modulating mechanisms will be discussed.
