1. Fisheries and Fish Biology
1g. Fisheries by-catch
By-catch is a conservation and management problem of staggering global and regional significance. Uncontrolled by-catch can decrease the sustainability of resources and the net benefits provided by the fisheries in several ways. Reduction of by-catch has become an increasingly important priority and a central fishery management challenge on a worldwide basis. By-catch reduction has been tackled through the implementation of gear change technologies and through management measures to minimize the capture of non-target species. This sub-session will review the current "state of knowledge" about fishery by-catch/discards, identifying gaps in research and management throughout the world and identify possible ways of addressing by-catch issues.
