1. Fisheries and Fish Biology
1b. Improved fishing technology and better understanding of fish behavior
This sub-session will focus on recent innovations in fishing technology and our understanding of fish behavior as part of the sustainable utilization of marine fisheries resources in coastal and open oceans. Specifically, this session will explore the technical measures that reduce negative impacts of fishing activities such as fishing gear design and operation, used to reduce by-catch and discard mortality, ghost fishing of lost fishing gears and methods to evaluate unaccounted fishing mortality. This session will also focus on incorporated fish behavior into maintaining sustainable fishing programs. Innovative options to evaluate and reduce fishing impacts on the habitats and the ecosystem are also welcome in this sub-session.
